Pieces of a puzzle that fit together but don't quite click. Scientists have created an environmental suit that, by repelling matter, lets people with immunological deficiencies move about outside their bubbles—though they can neither touch nor be touched by anything else. As a metaphor for social and romantic isolation the conceit is irresistable, so a potential love interest (the bubble-girl Irene) gets introduced. As a potential weapon it also has obvious possibilities, so a villain borrows and modifies it. But neither aspect interlocks with or reinforces the either, so the story never develops to its full potential. Still, there is more than enough intrinsic interest—especially some good, sour dialogue—to keep one entertained.
