Our favorite villain reclaims his humanity and reclaims our sympathy. And the tragic saga of Victor Fries comes full circle: In the beginning ("Heart of Ice") he was the victim of an unscrupulous industrialist tycoon and returned to wreak vengeance on a man who presented one face to the public and quite another to his victims. Then ("Deep Freeze") he was the tool of a tycoon who for health reasons needed Freeze's help. (Then there was much silliness in SubZero and "Cold Comfort" and we should all avert our eyes.) Now the great cycle reverses. He is rescued by Derek Powers, a tycoon who for health reasons needs Freeze's help. But when the hoped-for cure fails to materialize, Powers (who presents one face to the public and quite another to his victums) turns on Freeze and tries to destroy him. And again the freeze guns come out. Is it karma or Calvin, this inability to escape the slow, grinding glacier of fate? |
