At its best, this episode recalls some of the juicier melodramas from BTAS, shows like "It's Never Too Late" and "Paging the Crime Doctor." These were stories that, whatever their other shortcomings, had a strong line on moral compromise, and worked themselves into a nice froth of outrage at the exploitation of good people. The background story to "April Moon" is that a top prosthetics surgeon/engineer has his wife kidnapped and is forced to modify the kidnappers to make them "stronger, faster, more dangerous." And in a noir twist that they couldn't get away with back in their days at Fox, the creators are even able to indulge in a little revenge fantasy. The sight (and surrounding circumstances) of kindly Dr. Corso wielding a powerdrill is all by itself worth an extra half-star in the rating. |
