The Riddler's origins are tiresome and tiresomely developed, and the episode is salvaged only by John Glover's performance. Instead of the braying, mincing show-off popularized by Frank Gorsham and Jim Carrey, he gives us a coolly ironic concoctor of puzzles, locks, and other traps for boobies; he is more Mensa than maniac. But the fight in the Wasteland and the chase through the maze are completely unworthy of a villain who can casually trick his victim into donning a pair of handcuffs and who will irritatedly refer to his adversary as "Bat-. . . something or other."
