The pleasures of this episode derive not from action—when push comes to shove, Batman dispatches Bane a lot more quickly than some other adversaries—but from anticipation. An atmosphere of the apocalyptic gradually enfolds, tempered by Bane's thick but courtly manner. A pity this was not a two-parter: It would have made the suspense greater, and the confrontation and conclusion sweeter, if Bane had closed slowly but relentlessly on Batman, stripping him of accouterments, gadgets, Robin, leaving him naked and desperate for the final grapple.
