Character trumps story. As Charlie "Big Time" Bigelow, Stephen Baldwin (!) communicates pain, pride, humiliation, confidence, insecurity, humor, pathos, happiness, ambition, and resignation with effortless art; his soft rasp doesn't so much give voice to Bigelow as it embodies Bigelow's worn and frayed soul. This is an ex-con who has been pounded shapeless by life, but who wears his tribulations lightly and comfortably, like an old denim jacket he has had forever and would never part with, even if he could. This is the secret to the odd sympathy we feel for Bigelow even as he takes stupid and treasonous advantage of his old friendship with Terry. It will all end badly, and Bigelow knows it will end badly, but in his estimation defeat is just another word for home, and so he watches its approach without rancor. So unexpected is this characterization that our interest survives even the brutally conventional and predictable plot in which he is trapped.
